The fate of the 123,000-member Porcupine Caribou Herd is at the center of the decades-long debate over whether to drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. But what do we really know about these magnificent animals and their annual migration to their endangered calving grounds?

On April 8, 2003, two Canadians left the community of Old Crow in the Yukon Territory to join the caribou on their epic life journey. Karsten Heuer and Leanne Allison hope to travel 2,700 miles across snow and tundra by ski and foot to understand one of North America's last great mammal migrations before it's too late.
