Volunteer

NEO Group Outings are led by volunteer members who enjoy meeting other members, walking the earth, and finding inspiration to help protect it.

Local outings have a lot of support from the national Sierra Club, and a newsletter and Handbook for Leaders exist to help organize outings.

Clayton Daughenbaugh, the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance’s (SUWA) Midwest Field Organizer, will give a presentation on efforts to protect Utah’s Red Rock Canyon as wilderness. The Canyon is the largest area of undesignated wild lands remaining in the lower 48 states. The presentation includes a 15-minute multi-media slide show narrated by Robert Redford, describing the land, the threats, and the wilderness proposal.

If all goes as anticipated, 2009 will see a major push to pass the legislation designating the wilderness: “America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act”.

Community Meeting to Discuss Unprecedented Request by NiSource Columbia Gas

Lakeland Community College
7700 Clocktower Drive
Kirtland, OH 44094-5198

Background: In 2007 NiSource, the parent company of Columbia Gas outlined their efforts to acquire a 50-year permit from United States Fish and Wildlife Service officials to work on and repair their 16,000+ mile network of natural gas pipelines and storage units without triggering endangered species reviews.

This permit seeks to cover a one-mile planning corridor centered over existing natural gas facilities owned by the gas transmission company. Over 3,000 miles of the pipeline is located in Ohio.

To view a Service Map of the project go to: http://www.nisource.com/commitment_hcp.asp

Buckeye Forest Council, Ohio Environmental Council, and Sierra Club Ohio Chapter are organizing these community information sessions for the purpose of raising awareness about the NiSource request and to alert Ohioans about opportunities for public input.

On Friday, September 5, talks will be presented for the layperson with an interest in conservation.
